Missouri police and sheriffs’ departments are cleaning a bit of egg off their face after they mistakenly celebrated what they thought was a $100K haul of marijuana. But, it wasn’t marijuana, not even close.
They called it “one of the largest marijuana grow seizures in the area” and promptly celebrated on the the Jasper Police Department’s Facebook page.
Social media, as it usually does, took action as people pointed out that the officers were wrong in their assessment of their haul with one commenter saying; “that’s hemp” while another chimed in saying that their haul was “raw material of natural fiber rope.”
In fact, the comments piled on pointing out the error.
Still, growing hemp is illegal in Missouri unless you’re a licensed entity under the Industrial Hemp Farming Act. “It’s still just as illegal,” Show-Me Cannabis Chairman Dan Viets said in response to the hooplah. “It doesn’t matter if you call it hemp or marijuana.”
Actually, it does.
Hemp doesn’t really get anyone high and there is a major difference in the street value of hemp versus the street value of marijuana. So yeah, there IS a difference.
But hey, if they want to celebrate a big haul who are we to judge? As ‘Rick and Morty’ once said: “Don’t break an arm jerking yourself off”.
Jasper police Chief Chad Karr told the Riverfront Times that the Facebook posts weren’t intended to brag about a bunch of pot plants but instead to serve as some sort of notice suspected meth dealer operating in the area stating that he really doesn’t care if people in the area use marijuana.
